Default Im having a few problems....

Ive been playing several other MMo's, im just started out in guildwars today... I was wondering if anyone could anwser one, or several questions i have....

I was curious, whats the most over played class in the game? as well as least played? most needed? best at pvp? things like that.... I just know so little about the game but want to know a bit about the charactors and population of the classes before i decide what i want to be.... I ask here on the forums because i cant find anywhere online about class balances in population and whats needed and whats not....

thanks

The most 'overplayed' profession in the game?

I'd have to say W/Mo, because people have these stupid ideas that Warriors should be tanking and healing everyone.

Least played?

I saw a poll a few weeks ago that Paragons were the most disliked to play. I'm guessing that reflects on the amount of Paragons out there.

Most needed?

Hmmm, everyone seems to need a Monk, but you can hench all of PvE so this matters very little.

Best at PvP?

If there were only 2 professions, one that had a skill that instantly killed the opponent, and the other had no skills at all, how many people do you think would play the one with no skills? The game is designed to be balanced, or otherwise it would be pointless.

First, to a new player of GW, one must explain that GW system is a bit different from the classical systems.

Your character can change almost anything about itself. A necromancer primary character could one second be a Minion master, and the next be a nuker that uses the energy gained from the primary attribute to support the incoming nukes.

No profession is really overpopulated. GW's flexibility of character building makes it so that many characters can "double" as other professions just by switching the secondary profession and using appropriate skills.

The most popular archetypes would be the stereotypical triad or Warrior tank, Elementalist nuker and Monk healer. Since everyone knows what these do, they are familiar to all players, which makes it a little bit easier to get in a group where grouping is needed.

Also, an INVALUABLE resource is gw.gamewikis.org . You'll find EVERYTHING there, including beginner's guides and profession guides.

The most needed class is probably going to be monk, as almost any group in both PvE and PvP is going to need them. But of course because of the balance of Guild Wars, every class is needed for at least something.

In terms of PvP, there really is no "best" class, as they all have different and much needed roles. In fact most competitive and higher end PvPers are able to play most if not all classes fairly competently, though most do specialize in one role (melee, caster, or monk).

Pretty much just pick the class that interests you the most and you think you will have the most fun with, as all classes are useful in the game and there is no "bad" class, really. Later on you'll find that it's quite easy to simply make a new character with a different profession and try out that profession also (easier to do with pvp characters, but pve is simple too, as long as you're fine with playing through the game again).

Every profession has a use somewhere in the game, and can fit into a variety of different roles depending on the skills you outfit them with and how you distribute your attribute points. Furthermore, all professions have their strong and weak points, so that no single profession is truly superior to any of the others.

Although some professions are easier to get to grips with than others. As you're new to the game, I'd suggest going for a relatively straightforward profession like a Warrior or Elementalist, so that you can start to get to grips with how the game works. Also, you're always going to have a minimum of 4 character slots, so you can experiment with different professions to get a general feel for them before you settle on the one that you like the most.

Welcome to GW!

Great advice from everyone. For PvP, you can roll a new character at anytime (as long as you have an empty slot), as they are created at max level with max stat armor and weapons available. For PvE, you have the beginner area to make a decision without a huge time investment. There are no penalties or costs for deleting characters which adds to the flexibililty of the game.

GW is all about skills, obtaining them and learning to use them effectively. Don't worry about popular professions as that changes from area to area. Concentrate on playing a profession you enjoy, the enjoyment will show in your level of play. It's better to be a great assassin than a lackluster monk.

Welcome to the game and our forums.

Just a sidenote: in GW the skills you can combine are the key to succes and on how you combine your skills with the rest of the party.

So if you unlock a skill in PVE it automaticly unlocks it for PVP too, but if you unlock something through PVP its not fully unlocked for PVE. PVP rolled chars are only PVP, but with PVE chars after lvling them and getting there skills ... you can PVP with them too.

Most keep one slot for a PVP char - and the other 3 (if you only have one campaign and not extra slots added) for PVE chars.

Just try the classes for PVE and play the ones you like.

Welcome to Guild Wars
